Carie Lyndene1. When did you realise you wanted to start your own business?

When I was 19 (in 1979) and a student in Edinburgh studying Nursery Education, Margaret Thatcher got into power and cut jobs and services. Therefore after I qualified I never actually found a full time job. Not long after that, my then boyfriend persuaded me to join him on one of his sales appointments where he designed and sold fitted kitchens.

I had taken a “Girl Friday” job with a local interior designer and was earning a whopping great £60 per week! He showed me that selling (in integrity) he could earn about £1000 a week. I was hooked! No contest, I started to do the same and by the age of 24 I was driving my Porsche that I had bought CASH!

2. How did you get started and what was the biggest hurdle you overcame?

Sorry, I really answered that in question one! Biggest hurdle was when my son was born. I really didn’t want to go out in the evenings to see my prospects which was the time best to get couples together. I gave up a highly lucrative business to work from home as an Networking Entrepreneur in Health and Nutrition so that I could work my hours around my small children. The irony was I was so successful in that business was I was never at home!

3. What’s been your most successful way of getting clients?

Without question, speaking at events & networking. I follow that up now with lots of new media marketing but its back to the old adage people buy from people.

4. How do you get clients to stay with you and use you for more work?

Building relationships every time. Helping them get results of course and moving them to the next level. It’s also important to let clients go too if they need something else from somebody else. It’s important to be in integrity with your offering. If you client needs something you can’t provide or someone can do better, encourage them to go there. You will never lose that client because the relationship is intact.

5. Do you ever have issues with clients paying late? How do you manage that?

Not really. My clients pay in advance. That way I stay in integrity to myself and my own business. I am their mentor & coach not financier. I would be doing them a dis-service to be any other way. It’s important to model the ethics. Also clients who pay in advance typically get far better results because they are committed at a deeper level.

The other way is I always pay my bills right away ( even is there are 28 days to pay) That way there is no blocked energy around money. I do not agree with coaches who recommend not to pay until the last minute. It blocks the money flow for all involved.

6. What does your typical work day look like?

Depends what day it is!

Monday & Friday are creative / marketing or training days.

Tuesday, Wednesday Thursday are client days.

Start off every day by seeing teenage son off to school. Healthy breakfast then at the desk by 9am. On client days, I see 2 or 3 a day for 90-120 minute sessions but always finished at four for son’s reappearance!

Friday afternoon is spent with my mastermind buddy, reflecting, reviewing and revising what’s worked that week and targets for the next week.

7. Any piece of advice/wisdom that you’d like to give the readers at Business Unleashed?
